Um terremoto de magnitude 7,6 atingiu o Caribe ocidental em 8 de fevereiro de 2025, aproximadamente 130 milhas ao sul-sudoeste de George Town, Ilhas Cayman, a uma profundidade de cerca de 6 milhas. O Serviço Geológico dos Estados Unidos (USGS) inicialmente relatou o terremoto como de magnitude 8,0, mas posteriormente revisou para 7,6. O tremor, ocorrendo próximo ao limite das placas tectônicas da América do Norte e do Caribe, provocou alertas de tsunami para várias regiões costeiras, incluindo as Ilhas Cayman, Jamaica, Cuba, Honduras e outras.

O Sistema de Alerta de Tsunami do Serviço Nacional de Meteorologia (NWS) confirmou que pequenas ondas de tsunami foram detectadas, com ondas potenciais de 1-3 metros acima do nível da maré ao longo de partes da costa de Cuba e 0,3-1 metro para as Ilhas Cayman e Honduras. Embora muitos alertas tenham sido cancelados logo depois, o governo das Ilhas Cayman inicialmente pediu que os residentes costeiros se deslocassem para o interior como precaução. No entanto, nenhum dano significativo ou ferimentos foram relatados devido à localização offshore do terremoto.

O USGS observou que grandes terremotos nesta região não são incomuns, com 10 terremotos de magnitude 6 ou maior registrados no último século.
