Celtic Falls Short Against Chelsea in Thrilling Champions League Encounter

Celtic displayed a commendable effort in their UEFA Women’s Champions League clash against Chelsea, but ultimately fell short, losing 2-1 at Celtic Park.

Murphy Agnew opened the scoring for the home team in the 22nd minute, marking Celtic’s first group-stage goal in the competition. However, Chelsea responded swiftly, equalising just six minutes later through Maika Hamano, who capitalised on an assist from Aggie Beever-Jones. Ashley Lawrence then put the visitors ahead in the 32nd minute with a well-placed shot after a rebound, giving Chelsea a quick turnaround in their favour.

Despite dominating the possession and continuing to press in the second half, Chelsea struggled to find their rhythm, with Celtic goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty making several important saves. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Beever-Jones received a red card for a second bookable offence in stoppage time, leaving the visitors to see out the match with ten players.

Chelsea maintained their perfect record in the tournament, securing their third win in as many matches and remaining at the top of Group B with nine points. In contrast, Celtic, still searching for their first points in this year’s competition, will take pride in their spirited performance against the reigning Women’s Super League champions.

After the match, Chelsea coach Sonia Bompastor acknowledged the challenges posed by Celtic’s spirited play, while Celtic’s head coach Elena Sadiku expressed pride in her team’s effort despite the result. Both teams are set to clash again next week in London, as the tournament continues.
