Severe Storms Hit Malaga; Thousands Evacuated Amid Flooding Crisis

Severe storms and torrential rain have struck Spain’s southern Malaga province, leading to widespread evacuations and significant disruptions just two weeks after deadly floods in Valencia claimed over 220 lives. On November 13, 2024, nearly a month’s worth of rain fell on Malaga in just one hour, resulting in the evacuation of approximately 3,000 residents along the Guadalhorce River as a precautionary measure against flooding.

The Spanish meteorological agency AEMET issued a red alert for intense rainfall, predicting up to 180 mm of rain in some regions, including Malaga and Tarragona. Footage from Malaga city showed streets submerged, with authorities responding to over 300 emergency incidents and closing schools, metro services, and train routes, including the high-speed rail service to Madrid.

Malaga Airport faced significant operational challenges due to flooding, with numerous flights cancelled or diverted, and parts of the terminal affected by water accumulation. Emergency services have mobilised, and hospitals have limited operations to urgent cases only after some facilities experienced flooding.

Local officials are urging residents to stay indoors and avoid all non-essential travel, while emergency plans are in place to address the ongoing threat of additional heavy rain expected through the week. Amidst criticism of prior governmental responses to the last round of flooding, authorities are under pressure to improve infrastructure and disaster preparedness in light of increasing climate-related events.
