Tributes Pour In for Beloved British Actor Timothy West Who Dies at 90
British actor Timothy West has passed away at the age of 90, as confirmed by his family. West died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by loved ones, concluding a long and extraordinary life on and off the stage.
Born in Bradford on October 20, 1934, West was celebrated for his extensive work on stage and screen, including significant roles in British television’s most popular soap operas, “Coronation Street” and “EastEnders.” His career spanned over six decades, during which he was known for his portrayals of iconic characters, including three portrayals of wartime leader Winston Churchill in productions such as “Churchill and the Generals” (1979) and “The Last Bastion” (1984).
West was a distinguished member of the Royal Shakespeare Company and was renowned for his performances in classical theatre, taking on roles in Shakespeare’s “Macbeth,” “King Lear,” and “Hamlet.” His notable television appearances included leading roles in series like “Brass,” “Not Going Out,” and “Great Canal Journeys,” which he co-hosted with his wife, actress Prunella Scales. The series, widely praised for accurately depicting Scales’ dementia, highlighted West’s devotion to her care.
He was married to Scales for 61 years and is survived by her, two sons, a daughter, seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. West’s family expressed their sorrow, stating that he would be deeply missed and thanked the NHS staff for their care during his final days.
West’s contributions to drama were recognised in 1984 when he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). Tributes from various figures in the arts and media have poured in, celebrating his remarkable talent and impact on British theatre and television.
