Sir Tom Hunter Boosts Support for BBC Presenter Paddy McGuinness's Charity Challenge
Scottish businessman and philanthropist Sir Tom Hunter has pledged to match donations made to BBC presenter Paddy McGuinness’s charity challenge for Children in Need, raising the matching fund cap to £3 million. McGuinness is currently undertaking a five-day, 300-mile cycling challenge from Wrexham to Glasgow, a journey that has already garnered significant public support and raised over £4 million.
The Hunter Foundation initially announced it would match public donations up to £2 million, but due to the overwhelming response, Hunter decided to increase the limit. During the challenge, McGuinness is using a customised Raleigh Chopper bike, which has sentimental value for Hunter as he sold them in his youth.
Hunter expressed admiration for McGuinness’s determination and highlighted the inspirational nature of his effort, noting how it has captured the nation’s imagination. Many people have lined the roads in support of the TV host, reinforcing the sense of community around the event.
Previously, Sir Tom Hunter has been back in the news for personally financing the repatriation of former First Minister Alex Salmond’s body from North Macedonia after his sudden passing. Hunter described Salmond’s dedication to Scotland, stating that he deserved a dignified return home for both himself and his family.
Hunter, who made his fortune in business, has a long history of charitable engagement through the Hunter Foundation, which has supported various causes over the years, including Children in Need since the show’s inception. The BBC Children in Need appeal will air on November 15 at 7pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
