Choosing to bat first, India set a formidable total of 283/1, thanks to remarkable centuries from Tilak Varma (120 not out off 47 balls) and Sanju Samson (109 not out off 56 balls). The duo formed a record-breaking second-wicket partnership of 210 runs off just 86 balls, showcasing aggressive batting throughout their innings.
In response, South Africa struggled significantly, collapsing to 10/4 in the early stages of their innings. Arshdeep Singh was the standout bowler for India, claiming 3 wickets for just 20 runs, while Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel contributed with two wickets each. South Africa ultimately managed to post only 148 runs, all out in 18.2 overs.
This match marked India’s highest total against South Africa in T20Is and is the second highest ever by any team against South Africa in the format. The victory also highlighted Samson’s record as the first player to hit three T20I centuries in a calendar year.
Tilak Varma, who was named Player of the Match and Player of the Series with 280 runs in the series, expressed his joy, noting the significance of his performance in challenging conditions. South African captain Aiden Markram acknowledged his team’s shortcomings, emphasising the need for improvement moving forward.
Overall, India’s performance not only sealed the series but also served as a statement to the other teams in the cricketing landscape.
