Barry McGuigan Opens Up About Heartbreaking Loss of Daughter on I’m A Celebrity
Barry McGuigan has emotionally shared the story of his daughter’s tragic death during his time on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here. The former boxing champion broke down while reflecting on the loss of his daughter, Danika, who passed away in July 2019 at the age of 33 after a short battle with cancer.
In a poignant conversation with fellow contestants, McGuigan recounted the challenges his daughter faced, having first battled leukaemia at the age of 11. “They thought she wasn’t going to get better, but she fought back and she won it. She had two years of chemo,” he said. However, Danika was later diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer, tragically dying just five weeks after her diagnosis.
The emotional exchange took place around the campfire, where Northern Irish presenter Dean McCullough initiated a discussion about faith. McGuigan revealed he had distanced himself from church after his loss, stating, “I used to go to church a lot but after my daughter… you know, not so much.”
As he recounted Danika’s final days, McGuigan became visibly upset, prompting fellow contestants, including Danny Jones and Tulisa Contostavlos, to comfort him. “Thank you, you’re all so lovely, I really appreciate it,” he said through tears. His heartfelt story also resonated with Coleen Rooney, who shared her own experience of loss, recalling the death of her sister Rosie.
McGuigan has previously expressed that he will “never recover” from the pain of losing Danika, emphasising how central family is to his life. He described her as a bright light in their lives and acknowledged the lasting impact her absence has had.
