E. coli Outbreak Linked to Organic Carrots in the United States

One person has died and 39 others have fallen ill due to an outbreak of E. coli linked to contaminated organic carrots sold by Grimmway Farms in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the infections have been traced back to whole and baby carrots sold in major retailers, including Walmart, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods, across 18 states.

The CDC has recommended that consumers check their homes for these potentially contaminated products. The carrots were available for purchase from August 14 until October 23, 2024, with specific best-if-used-by dates ranging from September 11 to November 12, 2024, for the baby carrots.

As of November 17, 2024, 39 cases of E. coli O121 infections have been reported, with 15 hospitalisations. The illnesses reportedly began between September 6 and October 28. The CDC indicates that the true number of infections could be higher, as many cases may go unreported.

The recalled carrots are unlikely to be found on store shelves but could still be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Public health officials advise discarding any recalled products and sanitising surfaces they may have come into contact with.

Symptoms of E. coli infection can include severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhoea, and vomiting, typically appearing three to four days after exposure. Certain groups, such as the elderly and those with weakened immune systems, are at higher risk for severe complications like hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can lead to kidney failure.

Grimmway Farms, based in Bakersfield, California, has initiated an extensive recall and is cooperating with health authorities to investigate the source of the contamination.
