Arrests Made After Security Scare at Buchanan Bus Station
Three men have been arrested following a significant security incident at Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow, which led to the station’s evacuation and disruptions in the surrounding area on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. The incident began around 1:10 PM when police received reports of a potentially suspicious item at the bus station, prompting a response from the bomb squad, and a controlled explosion was conducted later in the day at approximately 9:40 PM. Fortunately, nothing suspicious was found following the explosion.
In response to the alert, police evacuated the bus station and nearby buildings, including Glasgow Caledonian University, and closed surrounding roads to ensure public safety. Train services from nearby Queen Street Station were also halted, causing frustration for commuters and passengers.
The bus station is the busiest in Scotland, and services from multiple operators, including Stagecoach and First Bus, were disrupted as a result. Passengers were advised to check with their respective transport companies for updates on service delays and alternative arrangements.
Police Scotland confirmed that the three arrested men are in connection with the possession of offensive weapons, and inquiries are ongoing. Authorities have reassured the public that they are working to return the area to normal operations as soon as possible.
In light of the incident, performances at the nearby Glasgow Royal Concert Hall were cancelled, including an event titled “An Audience With Celtic Legends” originally scheduled for the evening.
The police have urged the public to avoid the area while investigations continue.
