Healey characterised the measures as “common sense” and expressed the need for prioritisation of military budgets, stating that the scrapping of these outdated assets was necessary to focus on newer capabilities. However, the announcement has been met with criticism, particularly from opposition lawmakers who argue that such cuts could jeopardise national security at a time of escalating global tensions, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and increasing Russian aggression.
In response to the cuts, Healey has pledged that savings will be reinvested into the defence budget to bolster military capabilities. He also indicated that further reductions may still be forthcoming as the government grapples with a £22 billion financial shortfall left by the previous administration.
