Global PayPal Outage Causes Widespread Disruption Among Users
PayPal experienced a significant global outage on Thursday, November 21, 2024, affecting thousands of users who reported difficulties logging into their accounts and making payments. The issues began around 10:53 GMT, with reports peaking at over 9,000 according to the outage monitoring website, Downdetector.
The company confirmed on its service status page that a “system issue” was impacting various functionalities, including account withdrawals, the express checkout service, and its peer-to-peer payment app, Venmo. Users also faced problems with PayPal’s cryptocurrency services. Many expressed their frustration on social media, fearing their accounts had been hacked due to the sudden inability to access their accounts.
PayPal’s technical teams worked swiftly to resolve the issue, stating that it had been a “brief technical issue”. The outage was effectively resolved by 12:59 GMT, but not before causing considerable inconvenience, particularly for those reliant on the service for electronic transactions.
While the immediate technical difficulties were addressed, users questioned if they would be entitled to compensation for any associated costs, such as missed bill payments. However, PayPal and other banking services typically do not have to provide compensation for service interruptions, although users may seek reimbursement for specific incurred costs.
As of early afternoon, reports of the outage had significantly decreased, and normal service had mostly resumed.
