Storm Bert; UK Braces for Severe Weather Conditions This Weekend
Storm Bert is set to impact the UK this weekend, bringing with it severe weather conditions characterised by heavy rain, strong winds, and significant snowfall. The storm, named by Met Éireann, is described as the second named storm of the 2024/2025 season and is expected to undergo explosive cyclogenesis, resulting in a rapid drop in atmospheric pressure.
According to the Met Office, the storm will begin affecting the UK on Saturday, with wind gusts reaching up to 70 mph (113 km/h), particularly along coastal areas and higher ground. An amber weather warning has been issued for parts of northern England and Scotland, where heavy snow accumulation is anticipated—up to 40 cm (16 inches) in higher elevations—potentially causing dangerous travel conditions and isolating rural communities.
In addition to heavy snow, the storm is expected to bring 50-75 mm (2-3 inches) of rainfall across many regions, with south Wales and Dartmoor possibly receiving up to 125 mm (5 inches) in a single day. Such amounts of precipitation could lead to flooding, especially in areas with already saturated soil. The Environment Agency has issued yellow warnings for rain and flooding throughout the weekend.
Temperatures are expected to rise significantly as milder air is drawn in, with highs of 12-15°C (54-59°F) in central and southern England. However, colder temperatures will persist in the north, ranging from 2-7°C (36-45°F). This temperature shift may result in rapid melting of snow, further contributing to flooding risks in subsequent days.
Travel disruptions are likely, with National Rail warning of significant delays over the weekend. Charities and energy companies are advising residents to prepare for possible power outages and to stay warm as temperatures plummet. Schools across impacted areas are also closing as safety measures are taken in anticipation of the disruptive weather.
As Storm Bert develops, meteorologists continue to monitor the situation, urging the public to heed weather warnings and prepare for potentially life-threatening conditions.
