Tragic Dog Attack Claims Life of Seven-Month-Old in Coventry
A tragic incident unfolded in Coventry when seven-month-old Elle Doherty was killed by her family’s Belgian Malinois dog, Zeus, during a sudden and unexpected attack. The inquest, held at Coventry Coroner’s Court, revealed that the attack occurred on June 16, 2024, in less than a second, as the baby was crawling on the living room floor and purportedly brushed against the dog.
CCTV footage presented during the hearing showed Elle’s parents, Sean and Natasha Doherty, in the living room when the incident occurred. They immediately reacted to the situation, pulling Zeus away and attempting to comfort their injured daughter. Despite their efforts, Elle suffered catastrophic head injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital approximately one hour later.
The court heard that Zeus, who weighed 31kg and had been acquired as a puppy from a breeder in Gloucester, had previously undergone training with two dog experts. Both parents described the dog as generally good-natured and fine with other pets and children, stating he never displayed any aggressive behaviour towards Elle prior to the incident.
Detective Inspector Anthony Hibbert, who assessed the footage, stated that it appeared Elle may have inadvertently leaned on Zeus, initiating the attack. In light of this tragic event, the coroner, Delroy Henry, emphasised that the dog had not shown signs of aggression before, labelling the behaviour as sudden and unanticipated.
As a consequence of the attack, Zeus was taken to the vet and euthanised the same day. The coroner expressed heartfelt condolences to the Doherty family, reflecting on the profound loss they have endured due to this unforeseen incident, which has irrevocably altered their lives.
