On November 20, 2024, a remarkable event took place in London as Rumeysa Gelgi, the world’s tallest woman, and Jyoti Amge, the world’s shortest woman, met for the first time at The Savoy Hotel. This meeting celebrated the 20th annual Guinness World Records Day and highlighted the extraordinary differences of 152.36 cm (5 ft) between the two women.
Rumeysa Gelgi, who stands at 215.16 cm (7 ft 0.7 in) and is from Türkiye, was diagnosed with Weaver syndrome, a rare genetic condition that causes excessive growth. Meanwhile, Jyoti Amge measures just 62.8 cm (2 ft 0.7 in) and hails from India, where she has gained fame as an actress due to her role in American Horror Story: Freak Show, attributed to achondroplasia, a common form of dwarfism.
During their afternoon tea, Gelgi and Amge found common ground, bonding over their shared interests in makeup, self-care, jewellery, and doing their nails. Despite the challenges posed by their heights—often making eye contact difficult—their meeting was filled with warmth and mutual respect. Gelgi described Amge as “gorgeous” and said she was “so happy” to meet her, while Amge expressed her delight at looking up to the world’s tallest woman for a change.
Both women were officially recognised as Guinness World Records ICONS during the gathering, a new title introduced in the 2025 edition of the iconic record book, which celebrates individuals who inspire and break boundaries. Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records, attended the event and emphasised the importance of celebrating diversity and shared experiences.
Gelgi, a web designer and advocate for inclusivity, shared her aspirations to inspire others with visible differences, while Amge reflected on her happiness at being in the company of someone so kind-hearted. This meeting serves as a testament to friendship and understanding that transcends differences, showcasing that despite their extraordinary heights, both women are relatable figures who continue to inspire many across the globe.
