Conor McGregor Ordered to Pay €248,603 for Sexual Assault Damages

A jury in Dublin has found MMA fighter Conor McGregor liable for sexually assaulting Nikita Hand, ordering him to pay €248,603 (£206,000) in damages. The civil trial revolved around an incident that occurred in December 2018 at the Beacon Hotel, after a night of heavy drinking and partying.

Hand, 35, accused the 36-year-old McGregor of “brutally raping and battering” her in his hotel suite after they interacted at a work Christmas party. She testified that she repeatedly told McGregor she did not want to engage in sexual activity, citing her menstruation, but he allegedly pinned her down, choked her, and mocked her, referencing his UFC career by saying, “Now you know how I felt in the octagon where I tapped out three times.” Medical professionals who examined Hand the following day noted severe bruising and injuries consistent with her account.

McGregor denied the allegations, asserting that the encounter was consensual and described it as “enthusiastic and vigorous.” Following the jury’s verdict, he expressed disappointment, claiming the jury did not receive all pertinent evidence and announced his intention to appeal the decision.

Hand, who had previously sought legal action after the Director of Public Prosecutions declined to pursue a criminal case, expressed validation and gratitude for the support she received. Her lawyer remarked on the emotional toll the ordeal had taken on her life, compelling her to move and ultimately leave her job due to the trauma. Despite the ruling, a separate claim against McGregor’s associate, James Lawrence, was dismissed by the jury, finding he did not assault Hand.

The civil trial underscored ongoing challenges in bringing sexual assault cases to justice, as evidenced by Hand’s statement urging other victims to speak out and seek justice, emphasising that they have a voice irrespective of the circumstances.
