UK Contemplates Extra Bank Holiday for WWII 80th Anniversary
Next year, the UK is set to potentially enjoy an extra bank holiday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Government discussions are underway to allow for a long weekend, either surrounding Victory in Europe (VE) Day on May 8 or Victory over Japan (VJ) Day on August 15.
Currently, 2025 has eight scheduled public holidays:
- New Year’s Day on January 1
- Good Friday on April 18
- Easter Monday on April 21
- Early May Bank Holiday on May 5
- Spring Bank Holiday on May 26
- Summer Bank Holiday on August 25
- Christmas Day on December 25
- Boxing Day on December 26
The proposed extra holiday could manifest in one of two ways: either clearing Friday, May 9, and Monday, May 12, to create a three-day weekend, or adding August 22 as an additional day off extending the summer bank holiday.
The aim of this extra break is to honour the “Greatest Generation” for their contributions during the war, as around 70,000 WWII veterans are still alive today. The government has announced more than £10 million for events to mark these anniversaries, indicating a commitment to appropriately recognise this significant milestone.
While officials acknowledge the importance of the anniversary celebrations, there have been no definitive decisions made regarding the extra holiday. The government is weighing the economic impacts of any additional day off against public benefits. An announcement is expected soon, clarifying the final decision on the matter.
