In Memory of Liz Hatton; A Legacy of Courage and Creativity
Liz Hatton, a talented 17-year-old photographer from Harrogate, has passed away following a brave battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as desmoplastic small round cell tumour. Her mother, Vicky Robayna, confirmed the news on social media, expressing pride in Liz’s determination, empathy, and courage throughout her illness.
Diagnosed in January 2024 and given a prognosis of six months to three years, Liz created a photography bucket list to fulfil her dreams during her remaining time. Her journey captured the hearts of many, reaching high-profile figures, including the Prince and Princess of Wales. In October, Liz had the honour of photographing an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle, where she met Kate Middleton, who later described Liz as a “talented young photographer” whose creativity had inspired her. Their emotional meeting was highlighted by a heartfelt hug, picture of which quickly went viral.
Liz’s photography ambitions included capturing major events such as London Fashion Week, and she worked with renowned photographer Rankin and other prominent figures in the industry. Despite her rapid decline in health, she attended an exhibition of her work just a week before her death and remained focused on her passions until the end.
The Royal couple shared their condolences on social media, calling Liz a “brave and humble young woman,” while her mother reminisced about her daughter’s generous spirit and remarkable talent. Liz’s legacy continues as her family has initiated fundraising efforts for desmoplastic small round cell tumour research, highlighting the urgent need for better treatments and awareness for this rare cancer, which, according to Sarcoma UK, sees only about 12 cases diagnosed annually in England.
Liz’s story is a poignant reminder of the strength and resilience exhibited by young people facing serious illnesses, and she leaves behind a legacy of inspiration and hope within the photography community and beyond.
