Widespread Fog and Adverse Weather Cause Travel Disruptions Across the UK

The Met Office has issued a yellow fog warning for various regions across the UK, including Northern Ireland and parts of England, resulting in travel disruptions. This warning is valid until 08:00 GMT on Thursday, with conditions expected to deteriorate as widespread fog envelops areas, causing visibility to drop below 100 metres (328 feet).

At Belfast City Airport, the majority of flights have been cancelled or delayed due to the adverse weather. The airport has alerted passengers to potential disruptions both arriving and departing, emphasising that the situation will continue until the yellow fog warning expires on Thursday morning.

Driving conditions are also expected to be perilous, with motorists cautioned to be vigilant as freezing temperatures may produce icy patches on roads. The Met Office has highlighted the formation of freezing fog, adding further risk to road safety.

Grim incidents involving school buses in County Antrim have exacerbated calls for improved road treatment in rural areas. The assistant principal of Cross and Passion College reported a school bus slid on black ice but thankfully no injuries occurred. Calls for better gritting practices ensued following this alarming near miss.

In the Republic of Ireland, a similar yellow fog alert has been disseminated, covering 17 counties, including Dublin and Galway. Met Éireann anticipates temperatures will plummet to around -3 degrees Celsius overnight, intensifying the fog conditions.

The overarching weather issues across the region stem from Storm Conall, which continues to create turmoil within the UK, contributing to the current fog situation. With additional warnings for icy conditions and potential flooding, the public is urged to remain cautious and to assess their travel plans as the weather remains volatile.
