BBC Announces New Spin-Off Series 'Amandaland' from Hit Comedy 'Motherland'

The BBC has announced the release of Amandaland, a spin-off series from the hit comedy Motherland, which will premiere on Wednesday, 5th February 2025 at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The show, created by Sharon Horgan, Holly Walsh, and Helen Serafinowicz, focuses on Lucy Punch’s character, Amanda, as she navigates life post-divorce and the challenges of raising teenagers.

Amanda, now divorced, has downsized and moved to South Harlesden, humorously rebranded as “SoHa” by estate agents, despite its proximity to Wormwood Scrubs prison. Her children, Manus and Georgie, are entering their teenage years, bringing new challenges such as fake Instagram accounts, teenage drinking, and eco-anxiety. Amanda’s mother, Felicity, played by Joanna Lumley, remains a constant presence, offering backhanded compliments and veiled snipes about Amanda’s new life. Philippa Dunne reprises her role as Anne, Amanda’s long-suffering friend, who is reluctantly drawn back into Amanda’s chaotic world to help her navigate the social dynamics of her children’s new school.

The series also introduces new characters, including Samuel Anderson (Gavin & Stacey) as Mal, Siobhan McSweeney (Derry Girls) as Della, Rochenda Sandall (Line of Duty) as Fi, Ekow Quartey (Trying) as JJ, and Peter Serafinowicz (The Gentlemen) as Johannes. Notably, Anna Maxwell Martin, who played Julia in Motherland, confirmed she will not appear in the spin-off.

Sharon Horgan expressed her excitement about revisiting the characters, stating, “There’s such a fondness for Motherland and those characters. It was a real thrill to pick up the further adventures of Amanda and Anne, not to mention Felicity.”

The six-episode series promises to deliver the same sharp wit and relatable humour that made Motherland a success, while exploring the next chapter of Amanda’s life. Fans can expect a mix of chaos, comedy, and heartfelt moments as Amanda tackles the trials of modern motherhood and friendship.
