Joey Barton on Trial for Alleged Assault on Wife
Former footballer Joey Barton is on trial accused of assaulting his wife, Georgia Barton, during a drunken argument at their home in Kew, south-west London, in June 2021. The 42-year-old, who played for Manchester City and QPR, allegedly pushed his wife to the ground and kicked her in the head, leaving her with a bleeding nose and a lump on her forehead. The incident occurred after Barton threatened to fight his wife’s brother and father during a verbal disagreement about a family matter, Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard.
Prosecutor Helena Duong told the court that Barton “grabbed her and pushed her to the ground and kicked her in the head” during the altercation. When a friend attempted to intervene, Barton allegedly “threw” him off and said, “don’t disrespect me.” Mrs Barton called the police shortly after 11pm, reporting that she had been hit by her husband. During a tearful 999 call played in court, she said, “Me husband’s just hit me in the house. He’s in the house, I’m outside,” adding that it was the first time such an incident had occurred.
When police arrived at around 11:30pm, Mrs Barton told them she had been “pushed down and kicked about and stuff.” Barton, who was still drunk, was arrested at midnight in his bedroom. The couple, who have two children together, remain married and living together.
Barton denies a single charge of assault by beating. The trial had initially been adjourned in 2022 after Mrs Barton retracted her allegations, but the case was later reinstated following an appeal by the Director of Public Prosecutions. The trial continues.
