Mini-Tornado Causes Chaos in Cornwall Ahead of Storm Eowyn
A suspected mini-tornado caused significant damage in Cornwall on Thursday, 23 January, as the region braced for the arrival of Storm Eowyn. The tornado tore through Quintrell Downs, near Newquay, ripping roofs from houses, uprooting trees, and scattering debris across the area. Residents described the scene as “absolute carnage,” with fences, garden equipment, and structural damage left in its wake.
Luke Feely, a local resident, reported that the tornado damaged his roof and severely affected his neighbours’ properties. He described the event as “very scary,” with his partner still shaken by the experience. Another resident, Steve Beckett, recounted seeing fallen trees, garden walls, and roof tiles strewn across the road, calling the aftermath “complete carnage.”
The tornado also caused disruption at Holywell Bay, where caravans were overturned, and one person sustained minor injuries. Devon and Cornwall Police responded to multiple weather-related incidents, urging residents to stay safe and follow Met Office advice. The force confirmed that officers were on the scene dealing with the aftermath.
The Met Office had issued a yellow wind warning for the region, with gusts reaching up to 70 mph in some coastal areas. The tornado struck between 9:30am and 9:45am, leaving a trail of destruction in its path. Local builders offered free temporary repairs to those affected, while Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service assessed the damage to ensure public safety.
Storm Eowyn, which is expected to bring further disruption to the UK, has already made its presence felt in Cornwall. The tornado serves as a stark reminder of the severe weather conditions forecasted for the coming days, with warnings of strong winds, heavy rain, and potential snow. Residents are advised to remain vigilant and prepare for further impacts as the storm progresses.
