A suspected mini-tornado caused significant damage in Cornwall on Thursday, 23 January, as Storm Eowyn approached the UK. The tornado struck Quintrell Downs, near Newquay, at around 9:30am, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Roofs were torn off homes, trees were uprooted, and garden walls collapsed, with debris scattered across roads. Residents described the scene as “absolute carnage,” with one local, Luke Feely, reporting that the tornado tore off part of his roof and caused severe damage to neighbouring properties.

The tornado also affected Trevornick Holiday Park in Holywell Bay, where several caravans were overturned or destroyed. Fortunately, the park was closed to the public at the time, and no injuries were reported there. However, Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that one person sustained minor injuries when a caravan was blown over in Holywell Bay. Emergency services responded to numerous weather-related incidents, with police urging residents to avoid affected areas due to the risk of flying debris.

The Met Office had issued a yellow wind warning for the region, with gusts reaching up to 70mph in some coastal areas. The tornado was a precursor to Storm Eowyn, which brought further severe weather to the UK, including 100mph winds. Local builders and community members offered assistance to those affected, helping to secure properties and clear debris.

The incident highlights the unpredictable and destructive nature of such weather events, with residents expressing shock at the sudden and intense nature of the tornado. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as Storm Eowyn moves across the country.
