Morrisons Announces Over 200 Job Cuts in Cost-Saving Move

Morrisons has announced plans to cut over 200 jobs as part of a significant cost-saving initiative, becoming the latest UK supermarket to implement such measures amid economic challenges. The roles affected include positions in customer experience, employee engagement, recruitment, and payroll, primarily within the supermarket’s Retail People Team. The decision follows a review of the company’s structure to ensure efficient service delivery across its stores and sites.

A Morrisons spokesperson stated that the proposed changes would remove roles such as regional people manager, store people manager, and case specialist, placing affected colleagues at risk of redundancy. The new structure will introduce centralised roles to support supermarkets directly, alongside enhanced HR and employee relations support. A minimum 45-day consultation process will precede any final decisions.

The job cuts come as Morrisons, under CEO Rami Baitiéh, navigates a challenging economic landscape exacerbated by rising costs following the government’s October 2023 Budget. The supermarket has also faced increased competition from discounters like Aldi and Lidl, as well as pressure from larger rivals such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s. Earlier this year, Morrisons reported significant financial losses, partly due to the debt burden from its 2021 private equity takeover by Clayton Dubilier & Rice.

The announcement follows similar moves by other major retailers, including Sainsbury’s, which recently revealed plans to cut 3,000 roles and close its in-store cafés. Analysts warn that further job cuts across the sector may be on the horizon as supermarkets grapple with rising operational costs and food price inflation. Morrisons’ decision has drawn criticism from unions, with concerns raised about the impact on employees and the broader implications for the retail workforce.
