NatWest Announces Closure of 53 UK Branches Amid Shift to Digital Banking

NatWest has announced plans to close 53 of its branches across the UK between April and June 2025, as the bank continues to adapt to the growing shift towards digital banking. This decision follows the closure of 48 branches in 2024 and nearly 20 in 2023, bringing the total number of NatWest branch closures since 2015 to 1,431. The move reflects a broader trend in the banking sector, with over 6,000 bank branches having closed across the UK since 2015, according to consumer group Which?.

The closures are driven by a significant increase in digital banking usage, with over 80% of NatWest’s active current account holders now using online services and 97% of retail accounts being opened online. The bank has emphasised its commitment to investing in digital infrastructure, with plans to spend over £20 million in 2025 to improve customer service, enhance branch environments, and reduce the environmental impact of its buildings. Additionally, NatWest is exploring alternative solutions, such as partnerships with the Post Office and the development of shared banking hubs, to ensure customers retain access to essential services.

Among the branches set to close are locations in Blackburn, Leeds, Nottingham, Salford, and Stockport, with specific dates varying by location. The closures have raised concerns, particularly for elderly and vulnerable customers, as well as those in rural areas with limited access to digital services. NatWest has pledged to provide support to affected customers, including offering guidance on alternative banking options and maintaining mobile and community pop-up banking services.

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has introduced new rules requiring banks to ensure communities retain access to cash services following branch closures. This includes assessing the impact of closures and implementing solutions such as banking hubs or Post Office services. However, critics argue that these measures may not fully address the needs of all customers, particularly in areas with poor internet connectivity.

NatWest’s decision underscores the ongoing transformation of the UK banking sector, as traditional branch networks shrink in favour of digital-first solutions. While the shift offers convenience for many, it also highlights the challenges of ensuring equitable access to banking services for all customers.
