Storm Éowyn Ravages Scotland; Thousands Without Power Amid 100mph Winds
Storm Éowyn has caused widespread power outages across Scotland, with thousands of homes left without electricity as the storm brought winds of up to 100mph. Scottish Power confirmed that around 20,000 customers were affected, with the most severe disruptions reported in Dumfries and Galloway, where 11,000 homes lost power. The red weather warning, issued by the Met Office, has been extended to cover parts of southern Scotland, including the M74 and M75 motorways, with authorities urging residents to avoid travel due to dangerous conditions.
Scottish Power has mobilised multiple repair teams to restore power, but the extreme weather has hampered efforts. Aileen Rourke of SP Energy Networks stated that wind speeds of nearly 90mph have made conditions treacherous, delaying assessments and repairs. Food vans and hotel accommodations have been arranged for those in urgent need, while vulnerable customers on the Priority Services Register have been contacted for support. Residents experiencing power cuts are advised to report them via the national emergency helpline, 105.
In addition to Dumfries and Galloway, power outages have been reported in Paisley, Bridge of Weir, and other areas across Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, and Glasgow. Engineers are working to restore power, with some areas expected to remain without electricity until late evening. The storm has also caused significant disruption to transport, with trains suspended and schools closed across the affected regions.
The Met Office has warned of flying debris, large waves, and fallen trees, posing a risk to life and property. Power cuts have also impacted mobile phone coverage and other essential services. As the storm continues to batter Scotland, Scottish Power remains focused on restoring power as quickly and safely as possible, while urging residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.
