Storm Éowyn Ravages UK with Severe Power Cuts and Disruption

Storm Éowyn has caused widespread power cuts across the UK, with thousands of homes left without electricity as the storm brought severe winds and disruption. In Cornwall, more than 700 properties were affected, with 625 near Quintrell Downs experiencing outages due to winds exceeding 50mph. The Met Office issued a yellow wind warning, which began at 7am on Thursday and lasted until 6pm, with further warnings in place as the storm intensified.

In Scotland, the impact was even more severe, with over 100,000 homes losing power. Scottish Power reported around 70,000 customers without electricity in central and southern areas, while the Scottish and Southern Electricity Network (SSEN) confirmed more than 15,000 customers were affected, with numbers expected to rise. A rare Met Office red alert was issued, warning of wind speeds reaching 100mph, described as “exceptional circumstances” by meteorologists. Schools, trains, and ferry services were suspended, and people were urged to stay indoors.

Paisley and Bridge of Weir in Scotland were particularly hard hit, with unexpected power outages affecting multiple postcodes. Engineers worked to restore supplies, but repairs were hampered by dangerous conditions, with power not expected to return until late evening. Similar disruptions were reported in Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, and Glasgow, where fallen trees and structural damage added to the chaos.

Northern Ireland also faced significant disruption, with extensive power cuts reported across Fermanagh and South Tyrone. Northern Ireland Electricity Networks warned that the scale of the damage meant they could not provide estimated restoration times. The PSNI urged residents to stay indoors, emphasising the “serious risk to life” posed by the storm.

In England, Warrington Borough Council prepared for potential incidents, with extra teams on standby to address power cuts and storm damage. Scottish Power advised residents to prepare for outages by keeping emergency supplies, such as torches and charged mobile phones, on hand.

The storm’s impact extended to Yorkshire, where the Met Office warned of possible power cuts, mobile signal loss, and travel disruption. A rare red weather warning was issued for Northern Ireland, while amber and yellow warnings covered much of England and Wales. The Met Office cautioned that flying debris, structural damage, and fallen power lines posed significant risks.

As Storm Éowyn continued to batter the UK, authorities urged caution, advising against unnecessary travel and emphasising the importance of staying indoors. Recovery efforts were expected to take time, with power companies working to restore supplies as quickly and safely as possible.
