Amanda Holden and Alan Carr have returned to television screens with their latest renovation project, Amanda and Alan’s Spanish Job, which premiered on BBC One. The duo, known for their previous series Amanda and Alan’s Italian Job, have taken on their most ambitious project yet: transforming a derelict villa in the sleepy Andalusian village of Moclín, near Granada. The property, which had been abandoned for 35 years, was purchased for €65,000 and underwent extensive renovations, including replacing the roof and converting the loft. The house, named Casa Alamanda, is heavily inspired by Andalucia’s Moorish history, with traditional techniques used to create Mudejar-style ceilings. The renovation also included a sultry blue bar lounge, dubbed the “Soho House of Moclin,” and nods to Granada’s Alhambra palace.
During the renovation, the pair encountered some unexpected challenges, including finding a “poo in the bath” and a snake dropping from the ceiling. Despite these setbacks, the duo described the project as their best yet, with the aim of revitalising the village, which has a population of just 200 and is at risk of disappearing. The property will be sold furnished, with hopes it will be used as a BnB to promote year-round tourism.
The show has already brought a buzz back to Moclín, with the crew dining at the local bar daily during filming. Amanda and Alan’s celebrity presence is expected to have a positive impact on the village, much like their previous projects in Italy, where they successfully flipped decaying properties for profit. The series airs on BBC One and showcases the pair’s signature humour and camaraderie, despite occasional disagreements over design choices, with Alan jokingly describing Amanda’s taste as “tacky.”
