Arsenal Held to Goalless Draw by Wolves Despite Dominant First Half

Arsenal faced a challenging afternoon at Molineux as they were held to a goalless draw by Wolverhampton Wanderers, despite dominating much of the first half. The Gunners were reduced to 10 men just before halftime when Myles Lewis-Skelly was controversially sent off for a foul on Matt Doherty. The incident, deemed “serious foul play” by the Premier League, saw Lewis-Skelly shown a straight red card after VAR upheld the decision, leaving Arsenal with a mountain to climb in the second half.

Mikel Arteta’s side had started brightly, with Kai Havertz coming close to breaking the deadlock on two occasions. The German forward missed a golden opportunity, heading straight at Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa from close range, a chance described as an “absolute sitter” by pundits. Arsenal’s frustration was compounded by the red card, which shifted the momentum of the game.

The Gunners were without captain Martin Odegaard, who was ruled out due to illness, while Mikel Merino also missed the match through injury. However, there were positive returns for William Saliba and Ethan Nwaneri, who both started after recovering from injuries. Saliba’s presence at the back provided stability, but Arsenal struggled to create clear-cut chances after the sending-off.

Wolves, who remain in the relegation battle, defended resolutely and looked to exploit Arsenal’s numerical disadvantage. Matheus Cunha, linked with a move to Arsenal in the transfer window, started for the hosts but was kept quiet by the Gunners’ defence. Despite their efforts, Wolves failed to capitalise on their extra man, and the game ended in a stalemate.

The result leaves Arsenal six points behind league leaders Liverpool, having played a game more, and increases the pressure on Arteta’s side to bounce back in their next fixture. Wolves, meanwhile, will take encouragement from their defensive display as they continue their fight for survival.
