Former footballer Joey Barton is on trial accused of assaulting his wife, Georgia Barton, during a drunken row at their family home in Kew, south-west London, in June 2021. The 42-year-old, who denies a single charge of assault by beating, allegedly pushed his wife to the ground and kicked her in the head, leaving her with a lump on her forehead and a bleeding nose. The incident occurred while the couple were drinking with two other couples, and their children slept upstairs.
The court heard that the argument began after Barton threatened to fight his wife’s brother and father. Prosecutor Helena Duong stated that Barton “grabbed her and pushed her to the ground and kicked her in the head” during a verbal disagreement about a family matter. Friends intervened, pulling Barton away from his wife, but he allegedly “threw” one of them off and said, “don’t disrespect me.”
Georgia Barton called the police shortly after 11pm, reporting that she had been hit by her husband. During a tearful 999 call played in court, she said, “Me husband’s just hit me in the house. He’s in the house, I’m outside.” She added that it was the first time such an incident had occurred. When police arrived, she told them, “I’ve been pushed down and kicked about and stuff. He said he was going to fight with my brother and my dad.”
The case was initially adjourned in 2022 after Georgia Barton retracted her allegations, but the Director of Public Prosecutions successfully appealed the decision, leading to the current trial. Barton’s career has been marked by controversy, including a recent libel case involving broadcaster Jeremy Vine, for which he issued a public apology and paid £110,000 in damages.
