NatWest Announces Closure of 53 UK Branches Amid Shift to Digital Banking

NatWest has announced the closure of 53 branches across the UK, with the majority set to shut their doors between April and June 2025. This decision comes as part of a broader trend in the banking industry, driven by a significant shift towards digital banking services. The bank cited a dramatic decline in in-person transactions, with counter transactions dropping by 62% between 2019 and 2024, while mobile app usage surged by 53% over the same period.

Among the affected branches are locations in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Greater Manchester, and other regions. For example, the Alfreton and Clay Cross branch in Derbyshire will close on 2 June, while the Allenton Derby branch will shut on 13 May. In Nottinghamshire, the Basford branch will close on 21 May, and the Mansfield branch will follow on 26 June. Other notable closures include branches in Leeds, Liverpool, and Newcastle upon Tyne.

NatWest has emphasised its commitment to supporting customers through this transition, offering alternatives such as mobile banking services, community pop-up banks, and access to basic banking services at Post Offices. The bank also plans to invest over £20 million in its network in 2025 to improve customer service and reduce the environmental impact of its buildings.

The closures have sparked concern among customers, particularly older and vulnerable individuals who rely on face-to-face banking services. Campaigners have warned that the loss of physical branches could exacerbate financial exclusion, especially in rural areas with limited digital infrastructure. Under new Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) rules, banks are required to ensure that communities retain access to cash services, with options such as banking hubs and Post Office facilities being introduced to mitigate the impact of branch closures.

NatWest Group, which includes Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank, has closed over 1,400 branches since 2015, reflecting a wider industry trend. The bank maintains that the move is necessary to meet changing customer needs, with over 80% of active current account holders now using digital services. However, the closures continue to draw criticism from charities and local communities, who argue that physical banking spaces remain essential for many.
