Storm Éowyn Ravages UK and Ireland; Record Winds, Power Outages, and Fatalities

Storm Éowyn has caused widespread disruption across the UK and Ireland, with record-breaking winds, power outages, and significant damage to infrastructure. The storm, described as one of the strongest in decades, has left more than one million people without power and claimed at least two lives.

A 20-year-old man, Kacper Dudek, died in County Donegal, Ireland, after a tree fell on his car during the storm. In Scotland, a 49-year-old man was killed after being struck by falling roof tiles in Irvine. Emergency services across the UK and Ireland have been inundated with calls, with police in Northern Ireland reporting over 2,000 weather-related incidents.

The Met Office issued rare red weather warnings for wind, indicating a “danger to life,” which were later downgraded to amber as the storm began to ease. Wind speeds reached 114mph in Ireland, the highest ever recorded in the country, while gusts of 101mph were recorded in Scotland. The storm caused extensive damage to buildings, uprooted trees, and left roads blocked with debris.

Transport networks have been severely affected, with hundreds of flights cancelled and rail services suspended across Scotland and parts of northern England. Network Rail reported nearly 400 incidents of damage, including fallen trees and debris on tracks. In Glasgow, a roof from a nearby building was found on the railway line, halting services.

Power companies have warned that it could take up to 10 days to restore electricity to all affected areas, particularly in Northern Ireland, where 189,000 homes and businesses remain without power. In Ireland, around 138,000 people are without water, with supplies for a further 750,000 at risk due to power outages at treatment plants.

The storm has also caused significant disruption to schools, with all schools in Northern Ireland closed on Friday. The Scottish government has urged people to avoid unnecessary travel, and emergency services have been working around the clock to clear debris and restore services.

As Storm Éowyn begins to clear, another area of low pressure is expected to bring further heavy rain and strong winds to the UK over the weekend, with yellow weather warnings in place for wind and rain across much of the country. The Met Office has warned of potential flooding and continued travel disruption.
