Storm Eowyn Ravages Scotland; Thousands Without Power as Winds Hit 90mph

Storm Eowyn has caused widespread disruption across Scotland, leaving thousands of homes without power as winds reached speeds of up to 90mph. Scottish Power confirmed that around 20,000 homes were affected, with significant outages reported in Dumfries and Galloway, Paisley, and Bridge of Weir. The company has mobilised multiple repair teams, though safety concerns due to the extreme weather have delayed restoration efforts.

In Dumfries and Galloway, approximately 11,000 homes were left without electricity, with the A75 closed due to fallen trees and debris. Scottish Power has deployed food vans and offered hotel accommodations to those in urgent need. Aileen Rourke of SP Energy Networks stated that engineers are working to restore power as soon as conditions allow, urging affected customers to report outages via the national emergency helpline on 105.

In Paisley, an unexpected power cut impacted the PA3 postcode area, with engineers aiming to restore supply by 10.02pm. Similarly, the PA11 postcode area in Bridge of Weir experienced outages, with Scottish Power working to resolve the issue remotely and dispatching engineers to the site.

The Met Office issued a rare red weather warning, urging residents to stay indoors and avoid travel. The warning, in effect until 5pm, covers central and southern Scotland, including Glasgow and Edinburgh. Police Scotland advised against travel in affected areas, citing dangerous conditions with fallen trees and debris.

Scottish Power has prioritised vulnerable customers on its Priority Services Register, providing support and updates. The company emphasised that restoration efforts will continue as soon as it is safe to do so, with teams working around the clock to address the damage caused by the storm.
