UK Braces for Heavy Rain and Strong Winds; Yellow Weather Warnings Issued

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for heavy rain and strong winds across parts of the UK, with the potential for flooding and disruption. The warnings come as communities recover from the effects of Storm Éowyn, which caused power cuts, travel disruption, and fallen trees last week.

A yellow warning for heavy rain is in place for central and southern England, as well as much of Wales, from Sunday morning (26 January) until early Monday (27 January). Rainfall totals of 10-20mm are expected widely, with up to 50mm possible over higher ground. Some areas, particularly in Somerset, Dorset, and Devon, could see as much as 80mm of rain, equivalent to a month’s average rainfall in just two days. This could lead to localised surface water and river flooding, especially given the already saturated ground from recent storms.

In the West Midlands, including Herefordshire, Shropshire, and Worcestershire, strong winds are also forecast, with gusts potentially reaching 70mph on exposed hills. The combination of heavy rain and strong winds raises concerns about further disruption, including difficult driving conditions, road closures, and possible power cuts.

The Environment Agency has urged people to stay away from swollen rivers and avoid driving through floodwater, as just 30cm of flowing water can move a car. Teams are on the ground to reduce the impact of flooding, and residents are advised to check their flood risk and sign up for free flood warnings.

The unsettled weather is expected to continue into next week, with further spells of heavy rain and strong winds possible. Travel plans should be checked, and precautions taken to secure loose outdoor items and prepare for potential power cuts.
