Rare Planetary Parade to Grace the Night Sky in 2025
Six planets in our solar system are set to align in a rare celestial event, offering stargazers a spectacular view of Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. This phenomenon, often referred to as a “planetary parade,” will be visible in the night sky throughout January and February 2025, with the best viewing opportunities occurring shortly after sunset.
Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn will be visible to the naked eye, while Uranus and Neptune will require binoculars or a telescope to spot. The alignment will be most pronounced on the evenings of 24 and 25 January, with Mars reaching “opposition,” making it appear brighter and larger than usual. On 28 February, Mercury will join the alignment, creating a rare seven-planet parade that won’t be repeated until 2040.
The planets will not form a perfect straight line but will appear closely grouped on one side of the sun, creating an arc across the night sky. This alignment is a result of the planets orbiting the sun on the same ecliptic plane but at different speeds, occasionally clustering together when viewed from Earth.
For the best viewing experience, astronomers recommend finding a location with minimal light pollution and allowing at least 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. In the UK, clear skies are forecast for Scotland and southern England, making these regions ideal for observing the event. Stargazing apps like Star Walk and Sky Map can help locate the planets accurately.
This planetary parade is a special opportunity for amateur astronomers and casual stargazers alike, offering a chance to witness a celestial spectacle that won’t occur again for decades.
