3.8 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes New England, Felt from Maine to Rhode Island

A 3.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of York Harbour, Maine, on Monday morning, sending tremors across New England, including Boston, Massachusetts. The quake occurred at approximately 10:22 a.m. and was initially reported as a magnitude 4.1 before being downgraded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The epicentre was located about 8 miles southeast of York Harbour, with a depth of more than 8 miles underground.

Residents in Boston and surrounding areas reported feeling the shaking, which lasted several seconds. Social media posts and USGS data indicated that vibrations were felt as far south as Rhode Island and as far north as Portland, Maine. Despite the widespread sensation, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency confirmed that while shaking was reported across the state, no structural damage or emergencies were documented.

The York Police Department in southern Maine also reported no harm to buildings or infrastructure. Sergeant Brian McNeice noted that while the earthquake was felt by many, “everything appears to be the way it was before the earthquake.”

Earthquakes in New England are relatively rare compared to the western United States, but smaller quakes occur roughly twice a year, with moderately sized ones striking every few decades. The region’s older, denser rock allows seismic waves to travel farther, explaining why the shaking was felt across such a wide area. The USGS confirmed there was no tsunami threat following the event.

This earthquake follows a 4.8 magnitude quake that rattled the Northeast in April 2024, centred near New Jersey, which was felt by millions. Historical records show that New England has experienced significant earthquakes in the past, including a 6.0 magnitude quake off Cape Ann, Massachusetts, in 1755, which caused widespread damage.

Officials urged residents to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks, though none were reported immediately. The Maine Emergency Management Agency advised residents to check their homes for any damage and to avoid calling 911 unless there was an emergency.
