The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has reported a rise in cases of Human metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that has recently surged in China and is now circulating in the UK. HMPV, which causes cold-like symptoms such as cough, fever, and a blocked or runny nose, has seen a positivity rate of 4.9% in the UK, with the highest rates among those aged 80 and over at 7.3%.

Dr Conall Watson, a Consultant Epidemiologist at the UKHSA, stated that the current levels of HMPV are in line with seasonal expectations. He explained that HMPV is a common winter respiratory infection, with most people contracting it by the age of five and experiencing mild symptoms. However, vulnerable groups, including the elderly and those with underlying health conditions, may face more severe complications.

The virus spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing, as well as via contaminated surfaces. Health officials have advised the public to follow preventive measures, such as wearing face masks in crowded places, washing hands regularly, and covering coughs and sneezes. Those experiencing symptoms are encouraged to limit contact with others, particularly vulnerable individuals.

In China, HMPV cases have surged, particularly among children, leading to overcrowded hospitals and comparisons to the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. While the UKHSA has reassured that the situation in the UK is under control, experts have called for increased monitoring of the virus, especially given the higher rates of serious infections in China.

The UKHSA continues to monitor the situation, and the public is urged to remain vigilant, particularly during the winter months when respiratory viruses are more prevalent.
