The virus, which causes flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough, and sore throat, has seen a notable increase in positivity rates, particularly among older adults. According to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), HMPV positivity has risen to 4.9%, with the highest rates observed in those aged 80 and over at 7.3%.
HMPV, first identified in the Netherlands in 2001, spreads through direct contact or contaminated surfaces. While it typically causes mild upper respiratory infections, it can lead to more severe symptoms in vulnerable groups, including young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. In China, hospitals have reportedly been overwhelmed with cases, particularly among children, sparking concerns reminiscent of the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, health experts have reassured the public that HMPV is not a new virus and that the current spike aligns with typical seasonal trends.
The UKHSA has confirmed that the rise in HMPV cases is consistent with normal winter patterns, and there is no indication of an unusual outbreak. Despite this, NHS England chief executive Amanda Pritchard has expressed concerns about the strain on healthcare services, particularly as winter illnesses like flu and HMPV place additional pressure on hospitals and frontline staff.
Health officials are advising the public to take precautions, such as wearing masks in crowded places and considering vaccinations for other respiratory illnesses like flu and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus). While the situation is being closely monitored, experts emphasise that HMPV does not pose the same threat as Covid-19, given its long-standing presence and the existing immunity in the population.
