Tragic Stampede at Maha Kumbh Mela Claims 30 Lives

During the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, a horrific stampede occurred on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, resulting in the death of 30 people and injuring around 90. DIG Maha Kumbh Vaibhav Krishna stated that the incident happened due to heavy crowds on the Akhada Marg, which caused the barricades to break, and the crowd surged over the devotees waiting to take a holy dip during the Brahma Muhurta. Following the incident, the administration immediately initiated relief and rescue operations, and the injured were taken to hospitals.

Out of the deceased, 25 have been identified, including four from Karnataka, and one each from Gujarat and Assam. Treatment for 36 injured is ongoing at the local medical college. The administration has released a helpline number, 1920, where information about missing persons can be provided.

After this incident, the Akhada Parishad had cancelled the Shahi Snan, but it was later resumed following the intervention of CM Yogi Adityanath. The administration clarified that there was no negligence involved in the incident, and the crowd pressure was so intense that the barricading broke.

CM Yogi has ordered treatment for the injured at government expense and announced compensation for the families of the deceased. A commission has been formed to investigate the incident, which will submit its report within a month.
