Kay Burley Retires After 36 Years at Sky News

Kay Burley, the veteran Sky News presenter, has announced her retirement after 36 years with the network. The 64-year-old broadcaster, known for her tenacious interviewing style and occasional gaffes, hosted her final Sky News Breakfast programme on Wednesday morning. Burley joined Sky News at its inception in 1989 and became one of its most recognisable faces, covering major events such as the death of Princess Diana, the 9/11 attacks, and 12 general elections, including Sir Keir Starmer’s victory in 2024.

In her farewell remarks, Burley reflected on her career, describing it as an “honour and privilege” to work with some of the “best and hardest-working teams in the business.” She highlighted Sky News’ evolution from a “standing start” to a globally recognised brand. Burley also acknowledged the often devastating nature of news, while recalling joyful moments such as London’s 2012 Olympics win and royal weddings. She expressed gratitude to her viewers, saying, “I can’t tell you how much I have appreciated your support over the last three and a half decades. You’re awesome.”

Burley’s career was not without controversy. In 2020, she was suspended for six months after breaching Covid-19 restrictions during her 60th birthday celebrations, an incident she later admitted was “idiotic.” She also faced criticism for her blunt remarks, including calling a Scottish independence campaigner “a bit of a knob” and making hyperbolic statements during the 9/11 coverage. Despite these moments, she remained a formidable presence in journalism, earning praise for her sharp interviewing skills and resilience.

David Rhodes, executive chairman of Sky News, hailed Burley’s “unmatched” contribution to the network and British journalism. As she steps away from broadcasting, Burley plans to focus on her other passions, including travel, marking the end of a remarkable career in news.
