Tragic Mass Shooting at Örebro Adult Education Centre
A mass shooting at an adult education centre in Örebro, Sweden, has left 10 people dead, marking the worst mass shooting in the country’s history. The attack occurred on Tuesday, 4 February 2025, at the Risbergska adult education centre, which offers courses for adults, including Swedish language classes for immigrants. The victims, aged between 28 and 68, included seven women and three men, all from Örebro County. The suspected gunman, believed to be among the dead, has been identified as a 35-year-old man with no prior police record. Authorities have not yet determined a motive but are not ruling out the possibility of a racist motivation.
The scene was described as an “inferno” by police, with “dead people and injured people, screams and smoke” upon their arrival. Among the victims were two Syrian refugees, Bassam Al Sheleh, 48, and Salim Iskef, 28. Al Sheleh, a father-of-two and a baker, had posted a video wishing everyone a good day just minutes before the attack. Iskef, a healthcare worker, was due to marry this summer and had recently bought a house with his fiancée. A Bosnian citizen was also among the dead, with another Bosnian national injured in the attack.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the tragedy as “brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people” and assured the public that schools remain safe. King Carl XVI Gustaf expressed his “sadness and dismay,” offering condolences to the victims’ families. Police are continuing their investigation, including raids at several addresses in Örebro, but have stated there is no ongoing threat to the public. The incident has shocked the nation, with mourners laying flowers at a makeshift memorial near the scene.
