Trump's Gaza Takeover Proposal Sparks International Outrage
Donald Trump’s proposal for the US to “take over” Gaza and resettle Palestinians elsewhere has sparked widespread international condemnation, with critics warning it could amount to a war crime or ethnic cleansing. The US president’s plan, which he described as transforming Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East,” has been met with outrage from Palestinians, human rights groups, and world leaders.
Trump’s aides, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, attempted to clarify the proposal, stating that Palestinians would only be “temporarily relocated” for reconstruction efforts and that the US would not deploy troops to Gaza. However, the plan has been criticised as a violation of international law, with the UN and EU emphasising that Gaza must remain an integral part of a future Palestinian state.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cautiously welcomed Trump’s proposal, calling it “remarkable” and urging further exploration, though he did not endorse specific details. Meanwhile, Hamas officials dismissed the plan as “ridiculous and absurd,” warning it could ignite further conflict in the region.
The proposal has also drawn criticism from US allies, including Saudi Arabia, which reiterated its commitment to a two-state solution. Palestinian leaders and displaced residents in Gaza have vehemently rejected the idea, with one resident stating, “Trump can go to hell… We are going nowhere.”
The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, warned against any form of ethnic cleansing, stressing the need for a two-state solution with Gaza as part of an independent Palestinian state. The death toll in Gaza since the start of Israeli operations has reached 47,552, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, underscoring the devastation wrought by the conflict.
