A 47-year-old man has been arrested following a 36-hour stand-off with armed police at a block of flats in Sheffield. The incident began on Monday evening, 12 February 2025, when police were called to the Gateway apartments on Broad Street after reports of a man allegedly in possession of weapons and posing a risk to himself. Residents were evacuated and spent the night at Ponds Forge sports centre, while major roads, including Sheffield Parkway, were closed, causing significant disruption to public transport and commuters.
The man was arrested on suspicion of offences including affray, criminal damage, possession of a firearm, threats to kill, and communicating a bomb hoax. He remains in police custody. Roads have since reopened, and public transport has resumed, but the building remains closed, and residents are still unable to return to their homes.
South Yorkshire Police described the operation as “challenging” and thanked the public for their patience and support. The force emphasised its priority was to resolve the situation safely.
