Afghan Asylum Seeker Drives into Munich Crowd, Injuring 30
A 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker drove a car into a crowd during a trade union demonstration in Munich on Thursday, injuring at least 30 people, including children, according to German police. The incident, which occurred at around 10:30 local time in the city centre, is being treated as a suspected attack. The driver, identified as Farhad N, accelerated a Mini Cooper into the back of a rally organised by the Verdi union, which was part of a strike by public sector workers demanding higher pay and longer holidays.
Police fired a shot at the vehicle before detaining the suspect at the scene. Emergency services, already present due to the rally, quickly attended to the injured, some of whom were in life-threatening condition. Munich’s mayor, Dieter Reiter, expressed shock at the incident, particularly as children were among the injured. The suspect, who resides in Munich, had his asylum application rejected but was allowed to stay in Germany due to security concerns in Afghanistan. Authorities confirmed he had a valid residence and work permit.
The attack has heightened tensions ahead of Germany’s upcoming election, with migration and security dominating the political discourse. Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the act, stating that the perpetrator “must be punished” and “must leave the country.” Bavarian officials, including state premier Markus Söder, emphasised the need for decisive action, while counter-terrorism units have taken over the investigation.
The incident occurred hours before the Munich Security Conference, though police have stated there is no connection between the two events. Witnesses described scenes of panic, with pedestrians fleeing into nearby shops and buildings. The Verdi union expressed deep dismay, calling the act “heinous” and highlighting the presence of children at the rally. Investigations into the suspect’s motives and potential extremist links are ongoing.
