Armed Police Respond to Knife Incident in Lewisham

Armed police were called to Lewisham High Street on Monday, 10 February, following reports of a man brandishing a knife from a third-floor window. The incident, which began at around 10:45 GMT, led to a significant police presence, including armed officers, the London Ambulance Service, and the London Fire Brigade. The area was cordoned off, causing major disruptions to traffic and local businesses.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a man in a dressing gown waving a large knife from a window above shops on the high street. Callum Fahim, a passer-by, described the scene: “There are two armed police officers with a gun aimed at him, and they’ve been like that for a long time now.” The Metropolitan Police confirmed they were in communication with the man and stated there was no indication anyone else was inside the property.

The stand-off continued for several hours, with the High Street remaining closed and local businesses affected. A staff member at Lewisham Food and Wine said the cordon had “ruined business,” while residents expressed shock at the unfolding events. The London Fire Brigade and ambulance services remained on scene as a precaution.

The incident concluded in the early hours of Tuesday, 11 February, when police entered the property at around 01:55 GMT and safely detained the man. He was taken to hospital, and all cordons were lifted shortly after. Lewisham Council confirmed that residents were able to return home and roads were reopened.

The incident caused significant disruption, with buses diverted and traffic delays reported throughout the day. Local authorities provided support to those affected, including opening Glass Mill Leisure Centre as a rest centre for displaced residents.
