Dramatic Merseyside Derby Ends in 2-2 Draw at Goodison Park

The final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park ended in a dramatic 2-2 draw between Everton and Liverpool, with James Tarkowski scoring a stunning late equaliser in the 98th minute. The match, played on Wednesday night, was a fittingly chaotic conclusion to the historic fixture at Everton’s home ground, which has hosted the derby for 131 years.

Everton took an early lead through Beto, but Liverpool quickly equalised with a header from Alexis Mac Allister. Mohamed Salah then put Liverpool ahead in the second half, seemingly securing the win for the visitors. However, Tarkowski’s volley in stoppage time sparked wild celebrations among the Everton faithful. The goal survived a lengthy VAR review, confirming it was onside and not preceded by a foul.

The drama didn’t end there. After the final whistle, Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucouré celebrated in front of Liverpool fans, provoking a confrontation with Curtis Jones. Both players were sent off for second yellow cards. Liverpool manager Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff were also dismissed by referee Michael Oliver for their protests over the added time and the chaotic scenes that followed.

Everton boss David Moyes described the match as “mayhem” and praised the atmosphere at Goodison Park, calling it a “fitting” end to the derby at the stadium. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk criticised the referee’s handling of the game and accused Doucouré of provoking the away fans.

The result leaves Liverpool seven points clear at the top of the Premier League, while Everton move 10 points clear of the relegation zone. The final tally of Merseyside derbies at Goodison Park stands at 41 wins each and 38 draws.
