Elton John and Brandi Carlile Unveil New Album 'Who Believes in Angels?'
Elton John and Brandi Carlile have collaborated on a new studio album titled Who Believes in Angels?, set for release on 4 April 2025. The project, recorded at Sunset Sound Studios in Los Angeles in October 2023, marks a significant creative partnership between the two artists, alongside Grammy-winning producer Andrew Watt. The album, described as a return to John’s classic 1970s sound, features 10 tracks, including the title single, which has been praised as one of John’s best works in decades.
The recording process, however, was not without its challenges. Behind-the-scenes footage revealed moments of tension, with John expressing frustration and exhaustion. At one point, he declared, “I’m going home,” while Carlile noted his moments of insecurity. Despite these struggles, the collaboration ultimately proved fruitful. Carlile, a multiple Grammy-winning artist, played a pivotal role in encouraging John to reconnect with his iconic sound, even as she faced harsh feedback from him during the creative process. John later admitted to being “a nightmare” at times but praised Carlile for pushing him to deliver his best work.
The album’s title track, Who Believes in Angels?, is a duet that showcases Carlile’s soaring vocals alongside John’s soulful piano-driven melodies. The song has been hailed as a powerful and emotional ballad, evoking the grandeur of John’s earlier hits. The pair will perform together at a one-off show at the London Palladium on 25 March 2025, offering fans a preview of the album’s material.
John, who recently concluded his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, described the project as “one of the greatest musical experiences” of his life, signalling a new chapter in his career. Meanwhile, Carlile, known for her work in reviving Joni Mitchell’s career, has cemented her role as a key collaborator in this ambitious endeavour. The album promises to blend nostalgia with contemporary flair, offering a fresh yet familiar sound for fans of both artists.
