Football Manager 25 Cancelled; A Major Setback for Fans
The highly anticipated release of Football Manager 25 has been officially cancelled, as confirmed by its developer, Sports Interactive. The decision comes after multiple delays and internal discussions with Sega, the game’s publisher. The developers expressed their regret, acknowledging that the cancellation would be a “huge disappointment” to fans who had eagerly awaited the game.
Originally slated for release in late 2024, Football Manager 25 had already faced two delays. The developers aimed to deliver the “biggest technical and visual advancement in the series for a generation,” but encountered significant challenges. Despite extensive efforts, the game failed to meet the required standards, particularly in terms of the player experience and interface. Sports Interactive stated that releasing the game in its current state would not align with their commitment to quality, and extending the timeline beyond March 2025 would have been impractical, as it would coincide with the end of the football season.
Refunds will be automatically issued to those who pre-ordered the game. Sports Interactive has now shifted its focus to the next instalment, Football Manager 26, which is expected to launch later this year. The developers emphasised their dedication to creating a “new era” for the franchise, promising updates on their progress in due course.
The Football Manager series, first released in 2004, has become a staple in sports simulation gaming, with its most recent entry, Football Manager 2024, achieving record-breaking player numbers. Fans will now have to wait for further details on the future of the franchise.
