This marks the 17th official visit by Charles to Italy and his first overseas trip of the year.
During the visit, the royal couple will meet Pope Francis, continuing a tradition of engagements between the British monarchy and the Vatican. The timing coincides with the 20th wedding anniversary of Charles and Camilla, who married on 9 April 2005. The visit is expected to include a tour of the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel, among other engagements.
Charles, as the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, has previously met Pope Francis during visits to Italy in 2017 and 2019. He has also met Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI in the past. His mother, Queen Elizabeth II, visited the Holy See in 2000 during the last Catholic Jubilee year.
The trip underscores the ongoing diplomatic and cultural ties between the UK and the Vatican, as well as the personal significance of the visit for the royal family. Further details of the itinerary are expected to be released by Buckingham Palace in due course.
