Labour MP Andrew Gwynne Sacked Over Offensive WhatsApp Comments
Andrew Gwynne, the Labour MP for Gorton and Denton, has been sacked as a health minister and suspended from the Labour Party following the exposure of offensive comments he made in a private WhatsApp group. The messages, which included racist, sexist, and antisemitic remarks, were shared with other local Labour figures in a group titled “Trigger Me Timbers.”
Among the most controversial messages was one in which Gwynne responded to a 72-year-old constituent who had contacted her Labour councillor about bin collections. Gwynne allegedly wrote: “Dear resident, fuck your bins. I’m re-elected and without your vote. Screw you. PS: Hopefully you’ll have croaked it by the all-outs,” referring to the next local council elections. He also made antisemitic remarks, suggesting someone “sounds too Jewish” and asking if they were “in Mossad.” Additionally, he made derogatory comments about Labour MP Diane Abbott and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, including reposting a tweet linking Rayner’s parliamentary expenses claim for wireless headphones to a sex act.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer dismissed Gwynne on Saturday after the messages were brought to light by the Mail on Sunday. A government spokesperson stated that the prime minister is committed to upholding high standards of conduct and will not hesitate to take action against ministers who fail to meet these expectations. Gwynne apologised for his “badly misjudged comments,” expressing regret and understanding of the decisions taken by the party.
The Labour Party confirmed Gwynne’s suspension and announced an investigation into the WhatsApp group’s messages, pledging swift action if members are found to have breached party standards. The incident has sparked criticism from political opponents, with Conservative Party co-chairman Nigel Huddleston accusing Labour of harbouring “clear contempt for pensioners” and calling for further action.
