Liverpool Crushes Tottenham to Reach Carabao Cup Final
Liverpool secured a dominant 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at Anfield, overturning a 1-0 deficit from the first leg to win 4-1 on aggregate. The Reds will now face Newcastle United in the final at Wembley on 16 March, as they aim to defend their title.
Cody Gakpo opened the scoring in the 34th minute, capitalising on a cross from Mohamed Salah after a midfield error by Tottenham. Salah extended Liverpool’s lead early in the second half with a penalty, following a foul on Darwin Nunez by goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Dominik Szoboszlai added a third with a composed finish, and Virgil van Dijk sealed the win with a powerful header from a corner.
Tottenham, who had hoped to end their 17-year trophy drought, were outclassed throughout the match. They failed to register a single shot on target, marking the first time under manager Ange Postecoglou that they had been so ineffective. Postecoglou admitted his side were “way too passive” and struggled to cope with Liverpool’s intensity, particularly in the first half.
Liverpool’s performance was a testament to their depth and quality, with key contributions from Salah, Gakpo, Szoboszlai, and Van Dijk. The Reds are now in contention for multiple trophies this season, sitting six points clear at the top of the Premier League and progressing in the FA Cup and Champions League.
For Tottenham, the defeat raises further questions about their direction under Postecoglou, who has faced criticism for his side’s lack of fight in crucial games. Despite a strong start to his tenure, Spurs’ recent form has been inconsistent, and their inability to compete against top-tier opposition remains a concern.
Liverpool’s march to Wembley continues their impressive form under manager Arne Slot, who praised his team’s “complete and dominant performance.” The final against Newcastle promises to be a thrilling encounter, as Liverpool seek to add another trophy to their growing collection.
